We had been thrilled at the news that Commercial Street might have a traffic ban but before anything was finalised, the pandemic came along and we never got to experience what it would have been like to walk along the streets without worrying about vehicles coming our way. However, going by recent reports, it looks like we’re going to get a taste of it at the hip and happening Church Street! The popular street is all set to have a weekend traffic ban starting from November 7 as part of the Clean Air Street initiative by Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT).

The lowered pollution levels after the COVID-19 lockdown seems to have urged officials to take steps for cleaner and healthier city spots. And the Clean Air Street initiative is one such venture which puts the focus on clean mobility and sustainable practices. As per a report, DULT Commissioner, V Manjula said, “The initiative will also provide the opportunity to trial and refine street designs and create a blueprint for other streets across Bengaluru.” The weekend traffic ban will be in place for five months, as of now.

As part of the move, the officials will interact with street users like shoppers, resident and business folks to understand the various impacts of pedestrianising the street. Considering Church Street is the city’s first road to be paved with granite cobble-stones and revamped with a pedestrian-first approach, this new move is sure to make the street all the more welcoming for weekend crowds. In fact, if all goes well, Brigade Road and Commercial Street may be the next spots to get a similar makeover, reports say. Well, we know where we’re going to be over the weekend once this rule comes into effect!
